What is Scholarship of Teaching and Learning?
Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL), also known as teaching research in German, is the scientific engagement of instructors with their own teaching and student learning. Scholars of Teaching, or instructors who are active in SoTL, approach their teaching with a questioning and research-oriented attitude, employing research methods and theoretical reflection to develop their teaching further and gain insights into student learning in their own field. They share their experiences in informal groups, at conferences, or through publications. Additional information and helpful links to SoTL can be found in our self-study materials.
How do I obtain the certificate?
Your participation in the certification program is independent of whether you are already active as a scholar or are just beginning to engage scientifically with your teaching. In addition to an introductory workshop and participation in a SoTL colloquium that facilitates the mutual introduction and discussion of ideas, projects, and results, you will primarily work independently on your own questions. You will also develop a poster, a short article, or a presentation on the (interim) results of your engagement with teaching and learning questions. The HUL team is available to provide consulting services and feedback.
