The Hamburg Center for University Teaching and Learning (HUL) integrates research, a master's degree program and offers for evaluation in teaching. Besides, it is responsible for the qualification of all lecturers at the University of Hamburg (UHH). The center has three professorships, academic staff for research, teaching and qualification, and administrative staff. The integration is special for German higher education institutions offering the chance to entangle theory, practice and transfer in university teaching and learning.
All teachers at UHH (including student tutors) can attend various qualification programs free of charge that meet different needs: from low-threshold web sessions to exchange forums and workshops to certificates and conferences or teaching initiatives.
Self instruction resources
Text, image and video resources are available to all interested persons for information and further development of their own teaching. These resources can support teaching practice and are suitable for self study. The self instruction resources are organized along the logic of teaching as design.
The Team Evaluation advises and supports teachers, departments, faculties and central institutions of the UHH in their evaluation projects in teaching and learning. This includes surveys on teaching quality, surveys along the student life cycle as well as external and cross-university surveys.
With three professorships and academic staff, research on university teaching and learning is integrated into the HUL. Different research approaches to higher education are practiced, starting from psychological, pedagogical and didactical questions.
The linking of research and teaching practice at HUL makes it possible to collaborate with subject scholars who want to do research on their own teaching. Referring to the international movement Scholarship of Teaching and Learning, higher education research is thus complemented by research on discipline-specific teaching.
The consecutive Master's program Higher Education is a part-time online program. It introduces students to didactics, teaching and learning research, media education research, higher education research, and science studies, and integrates the completion of their own design-based research project.
