HIGHER EDUCATION (M.A.) at the University of Hamburg
The German-language Master’s of Higher Education (MHE) Programme provides research-oriented, advanced knowledge, skills and methods for university teaching and learning in:
- higher education
- continuing academic education
- training and further education institutions that pursue academic educational goals.
The MHE, based at the Hamburg Centre for University Teaching and Learning, is only offered in German and aimed primarily at people already working in higher education who have a first degree (equivalent to 240 ECTS credits) and would like to gain further qualifications in research-oriented university teaching and learning. The programme is open to graduates from all fields of study if they have already acquired additional teaching qualifications or come from areas related to educational sciences. Thus, the student body is very multidisciplinary.
The MHE is studied part-time and online and comprises a total of 60 ECTS credits. In addition to attending thematic modules, students complete a so-called project module in which they carry out a design-based research project on a practical problem from their own context: They develop and implement an intervention in their teaching or at their work with which they hope to improve academic learning and at the same time generate theoretical knowledge.
By completing the MHE, our students are qualified to work professionally and scientifically, e.g. to analyze, plan, develop, implement and evaluate high-quality teaching at universities, in scientific continuing education and other research-related training and higher education institutions. In addition, the degree program enables students to carry out relevant research. Knowledge, skills and attitudes are promoted that not only enable students to better understand and develop their own teaching, but also to advance university teaching in general. The Master's degree program also qualifies students for a doctorate in Higher Education.
