Professors Forum

The forum serves as an interactive offering that complements the podcast on science didactics, which engages professors in discussions about higher education didactics (ProfCast). At HUL, it is the only program specifically targeted at the group of professors at the University of Hamburg and invites mutual exchange once per semester.

Informally, at the forum meetings—limited to 90 minutes—we reflect on the future of university teaching, recap discussions from the podcast, explore new ideas and topics, and/or engage in scientific didactic discussions based on an impulse from a presentation.

Background: Wissenschaftsdidaktik

"Wissenschaftsdidaktik", or Research-Based Learning invites us to think about teaching from the perspective of the subject matter and to develop it collaboratively between higher education didactics and academic disciplines. What is behind this?

A university brings together many academic disciplines under one roof. Discipline-specific research influences the canon of knowledge that is made accessible to students through teaching. However, good teaching not only imparts existing knowledge but also provides students with access to the strategies and methods used to generate new knowledge: research, teaching, and learning must therefore be considered together.

The connection between research and teaching is not a one-way street. Teaching can also have a reciprocal effect on research—especially when students are involved in knowledge generation through research-based learning, when researchers gain new insights through the systematization and presentation of findings, and when opening up teaching to societal topics and actors inspires new questions and methods.

Access to research, scientific ways of thinking and acting, as well as communication and publication cultures differ from one discipline to another, which has implications for teaching and presents challenges for interdisciplinarity. While general didactic insights into university teaching and learning may apply to many subjects, research-oriented teaching also requires a discipline-specific shaping. In this sense, science didactics expands higher education didactics.

The date will be announced at the end of February/beginning of March 2025.

Topic
In the summer semester 2025, the professors' forum will be offered digitally. Guest speaker Prof. Dr. Julian Krüper (Ruhr University Bochum) will discuss the founding of the "Society for Didactics of Law" (in November 2024). The lecture will serve as an impulse for a discussion on the institutionalization of discipline-specific science didactics.
