Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL)

Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) is the academic enquiry of teachers into their own teaching and the learning of students. Scholars of Teaching and Learning, i.e. lecturers who are active in SoTL, look at their teaching with a questioning and researching attitude, use research methods and theoretical reflection to further develop their teaching and gain insights into student learning in their own subject, and exchange ideas in informal groups, at conferences or via publications.

We would like to support lecturers at Universität Hamburg in becoming active as Scholars of Teaching and Learning, making their commitment to teaching visible and engaging in dialogue with others. To this end, we offer various forms of training, counselling and collaboration.

With the SoTL certificate, your commitment to teaching becomes visible. It also opens up opportunities for dialogue with other Scholars of Teaching and Learning.
We support your SoTL commitment with counselling and feedback.
We work together with teaching staff on their ideas and goals within the framework of collaborations on academic didactics, e.g. in the project Strengthening the ability to act professionally.
We have initiated an open working group with lecturers in which we work with the decoding-the-disciplines approach to better understand students' learning obstacles and support students in overcoming them. We are happy to welcome new interested parties.
