TaLeS – Transformation of Teaching and Studying under Digital Conditions
Trend Studies from the Perspective of Teachers and Students at the University of Hamburg
In the summer semester 2020, as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, all face-to-face teaching had to be discontinued and converted to digital teaching. Funded by the Hamburg Center for University Teaching (HUL), researchers at the HUL as well as the Team Evaluation conducted one of the accompanying research projects on Emergency Remote Teaching (BERT). A total of five reports can be found in the BERT project archive.
Trend Study from the Teaching Perspective (TaLeS-Teaching)
Building on BERT, a total of three lecturer surveys were conducted as a trend study in WiSe 2020/21, SoSe 2021 and WiSe 2021/22. The aim of the study was to record the didactic development of university teaching under digital conditions from the perspective of the university teachers, to elicit, among other things, changes in the linking of research and teaching, and in this way to improve the information base for the didactic support and qualification of teachers at the UHH. As a large comprehensive university, the UHH can be understood as a case study for the development of teaching under digital conditions, so that in addition to the practical benefits for the university, a scientific knowledge value for the higher education didactic subject community was also expected.

Trend study from the student perspective (TaLeS-Studying)
Building on BERT, a trend study from the student perspective has been running since winter semester 2020/21 (until further notice), which is being conducted by members of the Team Evaluation. The goal of the study here is also to follow up on the digitalization processes triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic from the students' perspective and to document the transformation into the time after the containment measures have ended. At the same time, the results of the student survey will be made usable as an information base for the further development of UHH's degree programs and made available to the relevant quality management units. In addition to results with practical benefits for the university, the study also promises scientific knowledge value, which in this way contributes to expanding knowledge about research-oriented university teaching using digital technologies.
